Torre di Capoliveri
Isola d’Elba
Tuscany

A 13th century tower in a total state of decay with a breathtaking view over the entire Golfo Stella, the islands of Montecristo, Giglio and Corsica in the distance, transformed despite the constraints imposed by the local authorities into a contemporary, elegant and minimalist house, due above all to the homogeneity of the internal and external environments, obtained thanks to the ancient “Pastellone” technique or a highly effective opaque cement mixture for the floors.

The rooms are comfortable, despite being fitted within a total area of just 100 square meters distributed over four levels.

To overcome the problem of narrow spaces, most of the furnishings – from wardrobes to shelves to seats – are made of masonry. And multifunctional solutions have been adopted: such as the sofas in the living room, which convert if necessary into three-metre-long beds. Or like the coffee tables, created to measure with extendable iron legs and wooden extensions, to be transformed into a single dining table for 15 people

The details make the house even more personal, for example the hand-painted fabrics for the cushions and headboards of the beds, the metal numbers instead of the classic handles of the kitchen built with disused wood from a Viareggio shipyard. Or, again, the wardrobe doors in the room were dark in the past, recovered from an ancient building in Lisbon.
